Pre-Professional Prerequisites

Prior to admission to the professional phase of the Physician Assistant Studies Program, the applicant must have completed a minimum of 90 semester hours credit, including the courses listed below. The preprofessional curriculum follows the basic core curriculum offered during freshman through junior years at most Texas colleges and universities. The best way to find out what courses satisfy preprofessional requirements is to inquire. Counseling concerning prerequisites courses can be done over the telephone by calling the Allied Health Welcome Center at (210) 567-8744 (toll free 866-802-6288). Unofficial transcript evaluations may be requested through the Allied Health Welcome Center by emailing AHWelcome@uthscsa.edu.

ALL Program Prerequisites must be completed by the end of the fall semester of the application period.  Extensions/waivers will not be granted for missing Program Prerequisites.

Specifically excluded are remediation coursework, most technical courses, and other coursework deemed inappropriate by the department or the Allied Health Registrar. Required Core Curriculum Prerequisites may be waived if you have (or will have by Spring Semester prior to beginning the Program) a Bachelor's Degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university. If your degree is in progress, you must submit a waiver request along with a letter from an academic counselor or registrar stating you are degree eligible and the expected date of graduation by the application deadline.

NOTE:
All Program Prerequisites must be completed no later than the fall semester of the application period.

ALL science coursework requires the accompanying lab and must be for science majors.

All prerequisite courses must be passed with a grade of "C" or better.

Technical courses (nursing, allied health courses) are generally not accepted to meet program prerequisites.

CLEP and DANTES coursework is acceptable for most courses; contact the Registrar for minimum scores.

Electives - 25 hours

Additional courses in any discipline listed above or in social sciences. Medical terminology, speech, and foreign language courses (especially Spanish) are highly recommended. Additional science courses are helpful. You may NOT use a course as both a required course and an elective. Technical courses are generally non-transferable.

Visual/Performing Arts - 3 hours - Courses in art, dance, drama, music, or theater including performance-based, history, and appreciation coursework.

Humanities - 3 hours - Humanities includes the study of literature in the original language, and/or the cultural studies related to a modern or classical language.

INCLUDES: Philosophy, Ethics, Humanities, Classical Civilizations

DOES NOT INCLUDE: Foreign Language, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Economics, Linguistics, Geography

Applicants who will earn a baccalaureate degree no later than the Spring semester of the year of matriculation may be exempt from the following coursework: English, English Composition, US History I and II, US Government, Texas Government, Algebra or higher math, Sociology, Visual or Performing Arts, Humanities, and Electives. If accepted, these applicants will not receive the BSHCS degree. Students who have a degree in process must submit waiver request and a letter from a school registrar or counselor stating they are degree eligible and the expected date of graduation directly to the Allied Health Registrar no later than the December 15 deadline.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Appropriate fees are due upon submission of your application. Your application will not be processed until fees have been received by CASPA and the UTHSCSA Registrar. Fees are non-refundable.

Submit official transcripts from all schools, colleges and universities attended since high school directly to CASPA

DD 214 is required if prior military service. Submit with the Supplemental Application to UTHSCSA

All applicants must complete the full three years of coursework leading to the MPAS. Credit for PHAS courses may not be earned by past experience.

All students are required to have a laptop computer and high-speed Internet access. Students are required to purchase the laptop from the UTHSCSA computer store upon matriculation. In the second year of study students are required to purchase a PDA. Cost of the computerand PDA may be included in requests for financial aid.

THEA and TOEFL Test Requirements
Undergraduate students are required to take the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) test prior to the accumulation of nine or more semester credit hours.

International students who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must:

  1. submit their non-US transcripts for a course-by-course descriptive evaluation through an approved evaluation service PRIOR to submission to CASPA, and
  2. take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. TOEFL scores must be received by CASPA by the application deadline. See the UTHSCSA Catalog for minimum acceptable TOEFL scores.

Application Deadline
UTHSCSA will have one application period annually. Applications are accepted May 1 - October 1st for the class that starts the following August. Applications and ALL supporting documents must be received by the application deadline. Applicants must have completed all program prerequisite courses by the end of the fall semester of the application period. No application deadline extensions will be granted. Waivers are NOT considered for missing program prerequisites.

If you are taking coursework during the fall semester of the application period (whether prerequisites or not), you must submit a transcript to CASPA annotating coursework is “in process” by the application deadline. If selected for interview, please bring a copy of your fall transcript with grades annotated.
