Courses in red are not acceptable. Effective with the Spring 2005 term, courses listed in parentheses are unacceptable. If you took the course prior to 2005, it will still be accepted as a non-competitive course.
What is a non-competitive course? Courses in parentheses taken prior to the Spring 2005 term. We realize that students often take courses in good faith hoping to meet our requirements. However, in the Fall of 2003 we created these equivalency sheets and indicated at that time that we would not accept these courses beginning in 2005. What does using a non-competitive course as a prerequisite course mean to me as an applicant? If we have two applicants who are similar except one of them took non-competitive coursework, the applicant who took fully competitive coursework would be admitted over the applicant who took a non-competitive course.
For the Humanities requirement - most Humanities, Philosophy, Ethics, and Classical Literature courses will suffice - courses listed are a starting point. Please check information elsewhere on this site for coursework that is acceptable to meet the Humanities requirement. Generally, foreign language courses are not acceptable.
For the Visual/Performing Arts requirement - most Arts, Dance, Drama, Music, and Theater courses will suffice - courses listed are a starting point.
If you are creating a degree plan, we suggest you work with the Health Professions Advisor at your institution to be sure you are taking courses that will meet our needs. Often, upper level courses will meet a lower level requirement. All science coursework must be for science majors and must include the associated laboratory class. All prerequisite coursework must be completed with a "C" or better.
If you are unsure if a course will meet our requirements, please provide a course description, course syllabus, or URL (web address) to the course description, and the name of the institution where the course was taken. Inquiries should be directed to the Allied Health Welcome Center, AHWelcome@uthscsa.edu, or by phone at 210-567-8744 (toll free 866-802-6288).
We have also provided the Texas Common Course Numbers (TCCN) for courses accepted. Junior colleges must use the TCCN listing when numbering their courses. Four year institutions often list equivalent TCCN course numbers for their courses. If in doubt, contact a Health Professions Advisor at your school.
