THE UNIVERSITY of TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER Dress Code “You only have one opportunity to make a first impression.” —Anon. Students are expected to dress in a manner that reflects their maturity and matriculation in a professional course of study. Student dress, as well as conduct, must reflect the professional nature of the physician assistant. During the first two years of the program, students spend most of their time in lectures, laboratories, or other activities that involve limited contact with patients. At such times students are expected to dress comfortably, but in such a way that does not detract from learning activities. When patient contact is part of the curriculum, either through direct contact or with patient being brought to a lecture room, students are expected to present a professional appearance that includes the white clinical jacket with patch and the required student I.D. Course and program faculty should be consulted about proper attire in specific circumstances. During Supervised Clinical Practice, students are expected to dress as health care professionals and to wear the white jacket with program patch and the required nametag. For some rotations other forms of dress may be acceptable (example: surgery). The Clinical Coordinator should be consulted on any questions about dress on clinical rotations. During any clinical or patient contact settings, the hair must be worn off the collar and prevented from falling into patient fields. Tattoos must be fully concealed in any patient setting. Exposed piercings should be confined to the ear and no more than two studs may be worn in each ear. All pierced jewelry should be removed in the surgical setting as it serves as a nidus for infection. Fingernails must be kept at a length to insure patient safety and comfort. Artificial nails are a source for bacteria and should not be worn in patient settings. Remember, the impression you make by the character of your dress may influence someone or group that will have an impact on you or the profession in the future. Laboratory dress for PA students: In the anatomy lab students are allowed to wear surgical scrubs. Surgical scrubs are not allowed in any other classroom.
