Student Life - Rotations - STEER

South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER)

The STEER rotation is one of the most frequently requested elective rotations. Students usually go in a group of 3-5 to Laredo (housing is currently provided free) where they have a four week exposure to border and international health. Day trips are throughout the Laredo community with some excursions into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Students learn about community outreach and visit the Colonias located near Laredo. They test water and air samples and learn about how contaminants affect health. Time is spent with a traditional Mexican folk healer and curandero learning about medicinal plants and healing. Students also learn about rabies, dengue fever, West Nile virus and other endemic illnesses found only along the border region.

STEER received the 2003 Association of PA Programs (APAP) Parnership Award. Through its Partnership Award, APAP honors institutions outside formal PA program circles that have made outstanding contributions to excellence in PA education.
