Risk Factors for Osteoporosis

Are you at risk for developing osteoporosis?
Studies have shown that certain factors increase each individual's likelihood of developing osteoporosis.

Factors that increase the risk of developing osteoporosis include:

  • Female sex
  • Thin or small build
  • Advanced age
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Post-menopausal status
  • Abnormal absence of menstrual periods
  • History of fracture after age 50
  • Current low bone mass
  • Low testosterone levels in men
  • Diet low in calcium &/or vitamin D
  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Excessive use of alcohol
  • Excessive consumption of caffeine
  • Anorexia or bulimia
  • Use of corticosteroids, thyroid replacement therapy, or some anticonvulsants
  • Caucasian or Asian (although African Americans and Hispanics can be at risk too)
