The Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award

The PTAA presents our highest award to one distinguished alumnus who has demonstrated exemplary service to their community, country, and/or profession at the annual Alumni Weekend.

At the August 12th Reunion/Bash, the PTAA will present our highest award to one distinguished alumnus who has demonstrated exemplary service to their community and/or profession. Email your nominations for the distinguished alumnus award to Mike Geelhoed at geelhoed@uthscsa.edu. Please also include a short supporting statement for this nomination.

Kacey Wernli & Tracey Fontenot 2005 Distinguished Alumni

At the November 19, 2005 Alumni Bash Reunion, Kacey Wernli (‘94) and Tracey Fontenot (‘96) were recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Kacey and Tracey are the co-founders of Kinetic Kids, a non-profit organization in San Antonio which provides structured recreational and athletic activities for children with disabilities. Thanks to Kacey and Tracey for showing us all that UTHSCSA PT Alumni can make a difference in our communities!

PTAA Student Scholarship and Recipients

Applications will soon be available for the PTAA Endowment Scholarships.

Fall/Spring scholarships of $500 will be awarded to one student from the MPT II and MPT III classes. One $250 Spring scholarship will be awarded to a student from the incoming MPT I class. Deadline for applications is September 1 for MPT II’s and III’s, and October 31 for MPT I’s. These awards are funded from the UTHSCSA-PTAA endowment for student scholarships.

With the huge success of our PTAA Endowment, we were able to award the first 2 scholarships at our 2005 Bash. The recipients were Tammy Crisp (class of 2006) and Michelle Cockrum (class of 2007). Congratulations, Tammy and Michelle! You deserve it!

Alex Mata 2004 Distinguished Alumnus

Alex Mata, class of 1996 and lifetime member of the PTAA, received the 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award at the Dec. 11 Bash. Alex was working in the physical therapy clinic at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 when the building was attacked by terrorists. His heroic efforts to maintain and restore order and attend to the injured were invaluable in the hectic hours following the attack. Currently, Alex serves as an Navy reservist and works at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio. He and his fiancé, Libby, plan to marry in 2005. Congratulations, Alex. We thank you for your service to our country and our profession and we are very honored to have you as our first award recipient.
