Coordinated Program in Dietetics

 

Our program offers the unique opportunity to earn a dual degree; a Bachelor of Science with a major in Dietetics and Nutrition and a Master of Dietetics Studies.  The Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) designed to meet the didactic and supervised practice requirements set forth by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.  Students are admitted into the CPD have the opportunity to complete the didactic and supervised experiences integrated into the curriculum.  Students develop and practice skills in dietetics beginning at the junior year, and continuing through the senior year.  At the master level, students spend Tuesday through Friday (~32 hours/week) at various affiliations throughout South Texas practicing skills under the supervision of a registered dietitian (RD).  The rotations include hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation and wellness centers, schools, government agencies and programs, food service facilities, food banks, senior citizen centers and many other facilities. Students successfully completing the Coordinated Program in Dietetics are eligible to take the registration exam to become an “RD”.  This valued credential will increase the job opportunities and career marketability, and will facilitate securing state Licensure. 
 
Review of applicants occurs once a year for admission in the fall. Applicants must have completed all program pre-requisites before admission. Entry into our program is competitive, with 12 students admitted at the San Antonio campus and 12 students admitted at the Laredo Campus Extension.  Delivery of courses to and from both campuses is through video-teleconferencing and other distance technology. 

 

The program has been granted Candidacy for Accreditation from the CADE.  Students completing the BS/MSD requirements are considered graduates from an accredited program.  The Coordinated Program was also approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The program admitted the first group of students in the fall 2009.
