Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences
Immunohematology Track
The Immunohematology track of the Master’s Program in Clinical Laboratory Science is designed for clinical laboratory scientists who wish to further their specialized knowledge in the field of Immunohematology. Applicants MUST be certified as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or immunohematologist (CLS/I) by NCA or medical technologist (MT) or blood bank technologist (BB) by ASCP. Students have the option of selecting a full-time or part-time program and a thesis or non-thesis option.
During the first year of the program students will enroll in and complete the Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) program that is jointly offered by University Hospital and the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. During this time students attend lectures as well as spending clinical practicum time in the specific areas of the immunohematology laboratory such as transfusion service, component preparation, and HLA in various facilities in the city. After the first year students must pass the national examination to be certified as a Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB(ASCP)). During the second year students complete core courses, electives, and research if the thesis option is chosen. Graduates generally obtain supervisory positions in hospital blood banks, reference laboratories in blood centers, or industry.
