Welcome to the School of Health Professions
Dean Marilyn S. Harrington, Ph.D.
Thank you for visiting the Dean's page. I want to welcome you personally to what I believe is The Best School of Health Professions. Looking for a university to help you meet your goal of becoming a health professional is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life. It involves your future success. I would like to tell you why we are the School of Choice for you.
Our faculty, staff, and students invite you into our academic community for life. We wish to partner with you while you learn the attitudes, behaviors, skills and knowledge needed to become the practicing health professional you yearn to be. We are honored to take that journey with you. You will study hard while you are here, but you will make best friends for life and will have a network of faculty members and the entire UT Health Science Center at your side as you grow as a professional for the rest of your life.
Students are our reason for being – your success is our success.
Our class sizes are perfect for individual interaction with faculty members and for active learning sessions.
We offer selected programs in Laredo, Texas at the Laredo Campus Extension. This campus has two new buildings that offer great learning opportunities along the Texas-Mexico Border.
Our faculty members are the very BEST. Here’s why:
- We have faculty members who are THE thought leaders of their professions. Impressively, we have faculty members who serve or have served as Presidents of the American Association of Respiratory Care, the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and the American Association of Physician Assistant Educators and many more who serve on accreditation site visit teams, and President’s of state professional associations.
- Our faculty members write the textbooks used in your classes and classes of other students around the nation.
- Our faculty members are the very best teachers anywhere. There are too many faculty members who have been honored by teaching awards to name them all, but we have faculty who have:
- Received the Distinguished Professor title from the UT System.
- Been elected into the UT Academy of Health Science Education.
- Selected as the Innovative Teacher of the Year from the UT System.
- Received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
- Received the President’s Award for Excellence in Patient Care.
- Nationally selected as the Mentor of the Year by a professional association.
- Nationally identified as the New Teacher of the Year by a professional association.
- Piper Professor named by The Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.
- Pfizer/ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene.
- Our faculty members practice clinically and provide students with instruction on up-to-date patient care skills. You can work with them in the Lion’s Low Vision Center and a Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center in our own building.
- Our faculty are scientists who discover ways of improving patient care in areas such as inflammation, rehabilitation, infectious diseases, complementary and alternative medicine, periodontal disease, aging, health care delivery systems, and much more.
- A strong desire to mentor the next generation of health care providers.
Our Health Science Center is building a brand new wellness and fitness center that will offer all desired physical activities of your choice, such as swimming, intramural sports, weights, circuit training, kick-boxing, yoga, dancing, or just meet friends for a healthy snack and conversation.
You can interact with students in medicine, dentistry, nursing and graduate students in the biological sciences.
