The UTHSCSA PA Program puts special emphasis on community service. By immersing themselves in the community, PAs gain insight into both the community and the patients they serve. Immersion in a community involves recognizing health and other community issues, and learning to interact with community leaders.

Throughout the program students are offered a number of opportunities to provide service within the educational arena. Students are awarded service points for participation at events like Health Fairs and Pre-Participation Sports Physical Examinations held throughout the school year. There is an annual award to the graduating senior who best typifies this service commitment.

The Community Medicine Project is a capstone event for the PA student. The ultimate goal is to leave something in place that will improve the overall health or well being of the community. Much of the project is self directed.

During the course of the project, students conduct a needs assessment and appropriate research, design the project, and implement the project. Students are also required to create a grant request, a scientific poster on their project, prepare a presentation on their project to present to underclassmen, create a website in support of the project, and a final report that defines the project and ultimate outcome.

Learning group dynamics and the art of negotiation are integral to the outcome of the project. At the end of the

project, group members are evaluated on their individual contribution to the project as well as the overall project.
