Configuring Your Remote Computer for Campus Access
(For DSL/Cable/Modem Services)

This document describes how to configure a Windows computer using an access provider to allow access to machines in your UTHSCSA department, i.e. NT File Shares. If you want access to files on your NT Server at work, you must add entries for the campus WINS servers. You must have the WINS entries to allow the use of NT machine names because a non-routable protocol is used for Windows machine naming.

Instructions for High-Speed Access Modems:

  • Right-click “Network Neighborhood” and select “Properties”
    • Verify that you have:
      • Client for Microsoft Networks
      • Your NIC (Network Interface Card, example: 3 Com Etherlink) card is listed
      • TCPIP (example: TCP/IP ->) protocol installed
      • Double click TCP/IP that you found above
        • Click on the “WINS Configuration” tab
        • Click “Enable WINS Resolution”
        • Notice the Primary and Secondary WINS entries in the picture below (they should have the addresses 129.111.26.4 and 129.111.26.5), if not Add them
        • Click OK

  • Click on the “Identification” tab
    • Enter a name for your machine (example: last name_home)
    • Enter the workgroup you use on campus in the “Workgroup” box
    • Enter a description if you like
    • Click OK

  • After changing settings in your network properties, the system will reload and set up the devices
    • Note:You could be asked for your installation CDROM which will require a machine reboot
