Dr. Barnes named to San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame

Karin Barnes, Ph.D., OTR

Karin Barnes, Ph.D., OTR,  associate professor of occupational therapy and one of the founding members of the department, is among 16 women leaders who will be inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2018.

A fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association, Dr. Barnes specializes in pediatrics and is a highly sought-after expert in the area of occupational therapy for school-age children with developmental disabilities.

“Our inductees are truly extraordinary as they have moved our community forward through their successes as entrepreneurs, philanthropists, researchers, service members, educators, innovators, artists, volunteers, civic leaders and more,” said Virginia Van Cleave, president of the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame. “We are honored to recognize them at our induction gala, as they are inspiring the next generation of women who will lead our community forward in the years to come.”

Dr. Barnes research interests and expertise includes children with sensory processing disorders, emotional disorders, neuromuscular disorders and those who are developmentally delayed.

Among many projects, she is co-investigator on the Go Baby Go! research project led by Ana Allegretti, Ph.D., assistant professor of occupational therapy. That project provides modified ride-on toy cars to young children with mobility challenges to allow them to interact socially and engage with their world. Dr. Barnes assesses the children in the program to measure the impact of the mobility intervention on their development.

Dr. Barnes, who served as chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy for a decade before returning to teaching full-time this year, graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and a master’s in special education. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Texas at Austin in special education.

The San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame was established in 1984 to honor local women leaders who have contributed significantly to the betterment of Bexar County and adjacent counties.  The women selected for induction into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame have made significant and enduring contributions to their fields while inspiring by example.

The 2018 honorees will be formally inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame at a gala on Saturday, March 24 at The Omni Colonnade. Proceeds from the gala will fund college scholarships for young women graduating from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, a college preparatory charter school in the San Antonio Independent School District.
