Building an Endowment:
'For Generations to Come'

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio seeks contributions to build its endowments. These permanently invested funds provide annual income to help the university educate future health professionals, perform vital research and provide necessary health care "For Generations to Come."

Income from endowments at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio provides funds for faculty positions, research, fellowships, lecture series, library needs and scholarships.

Over the years, many interested individuals and organizations have established endowments at the Health Science Center. In 2003, our endowment funds have grown to over $60 million. These funds are helping advance the causes of health education and health care throughout Texas, the nation and the world. Our endowment donors have become partners with the Health Science Center by helping to educate much needed qualified health professionals. They also have enabled world- class research scientists to improve treatment and work toward eliminating threats to human life and well-being including diabetes, kidney disease, arthritis, psychiatric disorders, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disorders, to name a few.

Endowment funds provide an important measure of financial stability for The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. They guarantee the viability of the university "For Generations to Come."

Endowment opportunities

Many opportunities exist for you, too, to join the Health Science Center in making a dramatic difference in health education, research and treatment. All five schools at the Health Science Center -- Allied Health Sciences, Dental, Graduate Biomedical Sciences, Medical and Nursing -- will benefit from endowed positions. The fields listed below have been identified as priorities; however, other opportunities also are available.

Endowment categories

Various categories exist for endowing permanent positions at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. They are available at these minimum levels:

Distinguished University Chair $2,000,000
Distinguished Chair $1,000,000
Chair $500,000
Distinguished Professorship $250,000
Professorship $100,000
Fellowship $50,000
Student Financial Aid, Unrestricted and Miscellaneous
$10,000

Sound administrative management

Your endowment gift is carefully administered under a written endowment plan approved by the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System. One of the main objectives of this plan is to see that income from any endowed gift is used exactly as directed by the donor -- not just now, but "For Generations to Come."

Ways to establish an endowment

An endowment may be established with gifts of cash, stock, real estate, bonds and other personal property of value. The authority to accept gifts is vested in the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System. Endowments also may be created from a bequest in your Will or through one of The University of Texas System life-income plans. Further, an endowment may be established for the benefit of the Health Science Center at your bank or trust company with the income payable to The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Tax benefits

Donations for an endowment qualify for a charitable contribution deduction, and may, avoid capital gains tax. If the endowment is established through your Will, there may be a reduction of your state and inheritance taxes.
