Crime Prevention

It is the policy of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Police Department to take a proactive approach to the prevention of crime. This is accomplished by educating and raising the crime risk awareness of all patients, visitors, students, and employees within the University community.

The Crime Prevention component coordinates its efforts by working with other components within the Police Department to establish a wide and consistent effort in the prevention of crime. The following services are among many provided by the Crime Prevention Officer:

a) Operation Identification Program: Engrave and record official and personal valuables.

b) Security Surveys - A Security Survey is an in depth on-site examination of a physical facility, home, public or private institution, and its surrounding property to identify deficiencies or hazards to determine the protection needed, and to make recommendations to improve the overall security.

c) Presentations - Made to the University of Texas Health Science Center students, faculty and staff members. Information relating to the availability of Crime Prevention Presentations is normally disseminated by posters, news media, contacts by patrol officers, and word of mouth from groups having received presentations. Presentations available include: Office Theft Presentation, Home Security, Sexual Assault Prevention and Orientation for new students/employees.

d) Crime Statistics - The absence of serious criminal activity on the UTHSCSA campus precludes the use of statistical data for identifying and/or predicting crime trends. However, this information is of great value in determining the need for Security Surveys, in the preparation of presentations, and areas of concern that may be stressed in personal contacts with individuals of the campus.

UTHSC faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to help fight or prevent crime by responding on the HSC Police web page called “REPORT CRIME”. This page is viewed daily by the Crime Prevention Officer.

Emergency Call Boxes
Emergency Call Boxes are located throughout the university parking lots and in all the eleveators. In the parking lots and recreation area, look for a red box on a pole with a blue light ove rit on main campus. On north campus, the call boxes have red or blue poles with a blue light.
