Armand J. Guarino Award for Academic Excellence
Armand J. Guarino, Ph.D. was the founding Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences from 1972-1986. The Guarino Award is the highest student recognition given by the Graduate School. As such, it is a tribute to the outstanding accomplishments in biomedical research, the noteworthy leadership and the extensive involvement in service during their tenure as a graduate students.
Eligibility:
Graduating doctoral and masters students nominated by Chair of COGS of each department
Criteria:
Must demonstrate academic excellence and submit transcripts,CV and letters of recommendation, reprints of published papers.
Award Year and Amount:
Annually, $1,000 for M.S. and $1,500 for Ph.D.
Bennie Schreck Scholarship
Eligibility:
All doctoral and master's students
Criteria:
Must demonstrate academic excellence by submitting transcripts, cover letter, and letters of recommendation from supervising professor.
Award Year and Amount:
Every other year, $200-$500
The Council for Excellence in Women’s Health
The Council for Excellence in Women’s Health was formed in 2007. It’s mission is to improve the physical and mental health of women in San Antonio by building awareness of women’s health challenges, and to promote a greater understanding of and initiate philanthropic support for the Health Science Center’s women’s health programs and initiatives. The council membership, currently comprised of 86 influential women leaders who live and work throughout San Antonio and South Texas, continues to grow.
Eligibility:
All Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences doctoral students conducting research related to women’s health and demonstrate financial need by completing the FAFSA application
Criteria:
Must demonstrate academic excellence and cover letter, one-page letter of recommendation from the COGS chair, and one-page letter of recommendation from the supervising professor.

Designated Tuition Scholarship
Eligibility:
All doctoral or masters students who demonstrate financial need by completing the FAFSA application and are Texas residents
Criteria:
Must demonstrate academic excellence and submit transcripts, CV and letters of recommendation from supervising professor, COGS chair and one additional faculty mentor.
Award Year and Amount:
Annually, $1,000-$2,000
Greg Treibs Memorial Scholarship Fund
Eligibility:
All GSBS doctoral or master's students with preference given to students from Gillespie County, TX and then students who attended Texas A&M University
Criteria:
Must demonstrate academic excellence by submitting transcripts, CV and letters of recommendation from supervising professor.
Award Year and Amount:
Every other year, $200-$500
Joe A. Bass Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility:
Students enrolled in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
Criteria:
Students must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and complete the school’s scholarship application. Additional criteria may be used at the discretion of the school and will be made available upon request.

Annually, $400-$800
Phyllis & Neil Bowie Student Community Service Award
The award is named for E. Phyllis Bowie, Ph.D., and her husband, Neil. Dr. Bowie, associate professor of cellular and structural biology, retired in 2003 after 34 years on the UT Health San Antonio faculty.
Throughout her outstanding career, Dr. Bowie served as a mentor to many students and faculty members. Since 1993 she directed the Dental Gross Anatomy Course and co-directed the Dental Hygiene Structures of the Head and Neck Course. Dr. Bowie earned the admiration of her colleagues, students and community leaders. She received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Teaching Excellence Award in 1995.

All Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences third year or above doctoral students
Criteria:
Must demonstrate community service through volunteer activities in San Antonio and prepare a written description of community activities plus a transcript, CV and letters of recommendation from supervising professor.

UT Health San Antonio Presidential Ambassador Scholarship
The Graduate School selects a student to receive a UT Health San Antonio Presidential Ambassador Scholarship. The student selected will be asked to fulfill the following requirements for one year.
- Participate in distinguished events such as the Presidential Distinguished Lecture and Presidential Awards Ceremony, the annual visit by the Executive Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs for the UT System, the Health Science Center Gala and other events.
- Assist in promoting their school in whatever ways deemed appropriate by the Dean.
- Address the Development Board to give members an idea of the quality of students at the UTHSCSA.
- Occasionally serve as a student representative at community events.
Eligibility:
Each nominee must be a doctoral student who is in good academic standing, is able to speak to groups and will be available for one year to fulfill the obligations of the scholarship. The student should be in their second or third year. This award is not based on need.

Jess Hay Chancellor's Fellowship
The Jess Hay Chancellor's Fellowship was established to tie graduate education to timely and high quality research benefiting the State of Texas. Jess Hay served on The University of Texas System Board of Regents from 1977-89 and was chairman from 1985-87.
Eligibility:
All Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences doctoral students conducting research and nominated by Chair of COGS of each department

Must demonstrate academic excellence by submitting transcripts, CV and letters of recommendation from supervising professor.
Award Year and Amount:
Two annual $10,000 student research fellowships will rotate between select UT institutions as noted below:
