Researcher profile

Currently seeking Ph.D. students.

Darpan I.  Patel, PhD

Associate Professor

An accomplished educator and researcher dedicated to developing the next generation of scientists to make breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of disease through non-pharmacological interventions. The long-term objective of my research is to elucidate the mechanisms by which physical activity and natural products improve outcomes in cancer patients. My laboratory investigates 1) how exercise and natural products modulate growth of tumors, 2) the signal transduction of by which exercise and natural products attenuate muscle loss associated with cachexia, and 3) how discoveries made in the lab translate to the clinical population to improve patient outcomes. My objectives as a teacher and mentor are to promote independent, creative, and applied critical thinking, facilitate practical knowledge acquisition through experiential learning and challenge students in ways that build confidence. I have mentored high school, undergraduate and graduate students, many of which have gone on to further their education and gain employment at prestigious organizations. Projects conducted with undergraduates have been presented at national conferences across the country such as the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Conference, Experimental Biology and local presentations at UT Health San Antonio. Mentoring future scientists is at the heart of my educational philosophy.
