Egle Bytautiene Prewit, M.D., Ph.D.

Assistant Professor/Research

A native of Lithuania, Dr. Prewit received her MD at the Vilnius University, followed by a PhD in Clinical Sciences from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas. From 1997-2018 she was a faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UTMB. In May 2018, Dr. Prewit joined UT Health San Antonio in the Division of Reproductive Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The overarching goal of her research is to determine the mechanisms by which pregnancy and the postpartum period act as a window to the future maternal and child health. Her research concentrates on how pregnancy and its complications such as preterm birth, obesity and preeclampsia affect short and long-term maternal and fetal outcomes. Dr. Prewit is also studying the long-term maternal health benefits resulting from breastfeeding. Areas of particular interest are effect of statins on fetal inflammatory system after exposure to prenatal infection, oxytocin-oxytocin receptor and renin-angiotensin systems, effects of anti-diabetic medications on placenta and pregnancy outcomes.
