We have served South Texas for 40 years, delivering world-class oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Our students, researchers, and graduates have an excellent dental and medical education. Our research faculty have written the books on oral and maxillofacial surgery. We produce some of the finest dentists, scientists, physicians, and surgeons in the world.
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery concentrates on the diagnosis and surgical management of oral and maxillofacial conditions, including epithelial diseases and mesenchymal disorders of soft and hard tissues. Maxillofacial refers to the region of the facial skeleton and includes the bones of the forehead, cheekbone, face, and includes the jaws and regional soft tissues.
Our studies are focused on the mechanisms by which peripheral neurons that sense painful stimuli become sensitized in response to tissue inflammation and/or injury. The long-term goal is to support the evolution of clinical treatment paradigms for patients experiencing pain.
Our research group explores the science of jaw fractures and repair, osteotomy, bone plates, jaw fixation, dentoalveolar surgery, and reconstructive methods.
