Dr. Jones received his B.A. in Biology at the University of Kansas in 1970, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery (with distinction) at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry in 1973. He completed a two-year residency in general dentistry at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Waco, Texas, in 1976. He received his certificate in Periodontics from UT Health San Antonio in 1980.

Dr. Jones began his dental school teaching career during his residency in periodontics. He joined UT Health San Antonio faculty and taught surgical and non-surgical periodontics in the predoctoral division. In 1988, he became the course director for the DS III Periodontics lecture course and continued that responsibility until 2011. Also in 1988, he became course director of the DS III periodontics clinic course and he continued that responsibility until 2003 when a curriculum reorganization took effect merging that course into General Dentistry. In 2009, he became the director of the predoctoral division of the Department of Periodontics with oversight of all five Periodontics courses.

InĀ 2009-10, he was the course director for four of those courses. He has particular interests in curriculum development and organization, clinical and classroom teaching and development of novel teaching methods. He has participated in research activities since early in my career at the Health Science Center using both human clinical and animal model study designs. His time commitment to research has increased in the last few years as he has expanded his interests in dental implants and periodontal regenerative surgical procedures. His service activities have been related to education, curriculum development and continuing education.

Date Description Institution # Students
1/2018 - Present Periodontium and Pulp The University of Texas Health Science Center 103 students
Co-Course Director - Periodontium and Pulp was added to the curriculum in 2017-18 as part of the track "Health and Human Disease". The course is a consolidation of PERI 5081 Freshman Periodontics and PERI 6082 Sophomore Periodontics, as well as one previously existing Endodontics course. Basic science content is incorporated in this course to be sequenced with the related clinical material. The clinical periodontics component is comprised of approximately 30 hours of lecture. I present most of the clinical lectures. The basic science content is from Immunology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Oral Pathology and is taught by content experts in those fields.
9/2017 - Present Membership on Supervising Committee UT Health School of Dentistry
9/2017 - Present Patient Care Foundations The University of Texas Health Science Center
For each DS1 student, the periodontics rotation is comprised of three half day sessions in one week in the first semester and another set of three half days in one week in the second semester. Students are grouped in teams of 12 and each three-day rotation is repeated 9 times each semester.

The predoctoral Curriculum Reorganization in 2016 established three system-based tracks for DS 1 and DS 2 students. The didactic components of existing courses PERI 5081-Freshman and PERI 6082-Sophomore Periodontics were merged into a new course in the new DS 1 track "Health and Human Disease" DHHD 5003, "Periodontium and Pulp". Also incorporated was an existing Endodontics course. The Course Directors continued as Co-course Directors.
