UT Health San Antonio general dentist Dr. Barbara Arlene MacNeill

Barbara MacNeill, DMD, MS, serves as the director of the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic (AGDC) and assistant director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) at the UT Health Science Center. She is a former group leader and assistant group leader of one of the eight General Practice Groups in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. She is a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. She is also a member of the American Dental Education Association (Chair for the Section on Postdoctoral General Dentistry), the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, the San Antonio District Dental Society, Special Care Dentistry, and Omicron Kappa Upsil (President of the Mu Nu Chapter).

Dr. MacNeill received her BS (Chemistry), BA (Theatre) and MS (Chemistry) from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Her DMD degree is from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Her post-graduate education includes a two-year GPR program at UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry, in which she served as a chief resident. Dr. MacNeill received the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry "Excellence in Predoctoral Teaching Clinical Award", Faculty Assembly "Teaching Excellence Award" and has been selected as a Assistant Marshall multiple times for their Commencement exercises.

Expertise

Dental Care of Medically Compromised Patients -
Developed expertise after treating medically compromised patients in outpatient and inpatient settings, as well as lecturing on the treatment of these patients. Medical conditions include patients with HIV, liver disease, pre-transplant patients, pre- and post-radiation patients, and pregnant dental patients.
Digital Dentistry -
Attendance at various continuing education (didactic and participation) courses. Significant experience teaching and lecturing to residents on the topic.
Implant Dentistry (Placement and Restoration) -
Attendance at many implant continuing education and didactic and participation courses. Significant experience teaching undergraduates and residents to surgically place and restore dental implants.
Oral Care in Ventilated Patients -
Working with ICU nurses, respiratory therapists, oral medicine, hospital dentistry, and community dentistry on the development of an oral care protocol, training video, and testing module for the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia in the intensive care unit.
