Ravikumar Anthony, B.D.S., M.D.S., M.S. | School of Dentistry | UT Health San Antonio

Dr. Ravi Anthony is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and is fully board certified. He grew up in Mumbai (Bombay), India and is a 1999 graduate of the Governmental Dental College and Hospital of Mumbai. He then proceeded to complete his orthodontic training at the Governmental Dental College and Hospital of Ahmedabad. He served as lecturer at D.Y. Patil Dental College & Hospital in Mumbai for three years before starting his orthodontic residency here at UT Health San Antonio.

He has been working as a clinical instructor here at UT Health San Antonio since August 2008. He works closely with the residents and is currently the principal investigator of a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of an investigational device in increasing the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. He is also involved in private practice in the neighboring coastal city of Corpus Christi.

His hobbies include reading, writing, movies, traveling, dramatics and cooking. Although far from his native India, he has extended family here in America, including two brothers and their families.

Course Director - During this course, the residents are exposed to all modern orthodontic techniques, approaches and appliances through the treatment of 65 patients started by each resident. In addition, about 20 cases are transferred. Residents are trained to utilize their knowledge of diagnosis, treatment planning and orthodontic techniques to provide comprehensive orthodontic care, according to the standards of the American Board of Orthodontics
4/2014 - Present ORTH5037 Orthodontic Lecture Series 14 students
Course Director - A series of orthodontic lectures aiming to complete the residents' knowledge on several orthodontic topics that includes- new patient work up and treatment planning, lingual and clear aligner techinique lectures, management of patients in the mixed dentition, dentofacial deformity conference and lectures, orthodontic finishing and detailing, orthodontic treatment and periodontal considerations, ABO scenario based oral exam.

Course Director - Following the course on research methodology, the residents meet with the faculty and attend presentations on research topics from which they select the topic of interest for the research project. The course includes understanding pf research topics of interest to clinical orthodontics, design of clinical study and practical laboratory on the selected topic.
4/2014 - Present ORTH5012 Orthodontic Lab Techniques 5 students
Course Director - The residents are exposed to didactic teaching and practical hands on instruction about the design and fabrication of various orthodontic appliances including removable appliances, retainers and special custom appliances for complex orthodontic patients.
4/2014 - Present ORTH5028 ABO Literature Review 5 students
Course Director - This series of seminars focuses on the literature required by the American Board of Orthodontics for the written board examination which the residents take during the 2nd year. The seminars include in-depth coverage of the presented articles and topics and board provided materials for preparation.
4/2014 - Present ORTH5014 Literature Seminars 5 students
Course Director - During this course, the 3rd year residents are required to study and present current literature articles, pertinent to treatment techniques they implemented in their clinical practice. Once a month, each student gives a 1 hour lecture, consisting of selected literature topics and treated cases.
4/2014 - Present ORTH5070 Practice Management 5 students
Course Director - The practice management course for orthodontics is an orthodontic specialty course designed to teach residents tools in managing successful practice. During this series of lectures from experienced private practitioners, residents acquire the necessary skills to build a fully functional and successful private practice, hire and train employees, be part of a professional team, become associates and develop ethical and beneficial marketing techniques.
4/2014 - Present ORTH5030 Case Analysis Seminars 14 students
Course Director - 3rd year resident does presentation of initial patient records and the faculty get active participation from the other residents in formulating diagnosis and treatment planning.
Using evidence based orthodontics, the 3rd year resident completes the presentation by discussing the progress and end of treatment.

Course Director - This introductory course aims to build a solid foundation on the principles of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning and prepare residents for their clinical practice. The residents are expected to gain understanding of basic clinical operations, laboratory procedures and collection of orthodontic data base including study models, photographs and orthodontic clinical exam
