Expertise

Ameloblastin -
Enamel forms on the basis of enamel proteins. One of these proteins is ameloblastin. In contrast to amelogenin (over 90% of enamel proteins), ameloblastin accounts for only 5% but is critical for enamel formation.
Enamel formation -
Enamel is the hardest tissue of the human body. The cells generating enamel are called ameloblasts. Amelogenesis is a highly regulated, stepwise process. The full maturation of enamel takes more than 4 years. My research focuses on understanding the biological and biochemical processes of enamel formation.
Periodontics -
My clinical practice is limited to the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases and implant therapy.

Course Director - Course director since AY 2012-13, 18 hours, 105 students enrolled, third year dental school. Junior Periodontics focuses on providing and managing the periodontal needs of all patients that a dentist encounters in a general practice. This includes a more in-depth understanding of advanced surgical and restorative procedures in periodontics. Course learning activities are designed to emphasize diagnosis, planning, delivering or managing nonsurgical periodontal therapy, more advanced periodontal therapy and understanding the preparation of the periodontium for restorative dentistry and maintenance of long-term patient health. The therapeutic options are discussed based on the available evidence.

Title Role of ameloblastin for ameloblasts and enamel formation
Status Active
Period 8/2012 - 7/2017
Role Principal Investigator
Grant Detail The enamel matrix secreted by ameloblasts provides an environment that requires tight regulation by ameloblasts for mineralization to occur. This proposal seeks to elucidate the role of ameloblastin`s structure for the enamel matrix, ameloblast differentiation and subsequent enamel formation. The importance of ameloblastin concentration, cleavage and internalization are explored to better understand the function of non-amelogenin enamel proteins. Ultimately, results from this research will yield novel therapeutic approaches for oral health care.
