Funding Agency Housing and Urban Development Title Housing of Urban Development- Project VIDA Status Complete Period 6/2007 - Present Role Contributor Grant Detail The mission of Project Vida was to identify the comprehensive vision of the community for its future and to develop community-based structures and programs to implement that vision in light of the needs and direction of the wider society. Funding Agency NIH Title National Dental Practice Based Research Network- Southwest Region Status Active Period 4/2011 - 3/2019 Role Co-Principal Investigator Grant Detail The nation`s network is an effort to help dental professionals directly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of dental care. Essentially, it is research done about and in the "real world" of daily clinical practice. Unfortunately, much of dental research has not had an immediate applicability to daily dental practice. In fact, some have referred too much of the dental research conducted as "scientifically valid, statistically significant, but clinically useless". We would like to change that.

Funding Agency ReACH/IIMS Title ReACH/IIMS Population Health Pilot Grant Status Active Period 3/2018 - 3/2019 Role Principal Investigator Grant Detail Electronic cigarettes, also referred to as e-cigs or vape pens, are battery-powered devices that deliver a smoke-like aerosol (i.e., vapor) that the user inhales, producing an experience that resembles the act of smoking a conventional cigarette. E-cigarettes were introduced in the U.S. market in 2007. Since then, their use has increased substantially. Although the prevalence of conventional cigarette smoking among U.S. adults decreased from 19.3% to 17.8% between 2010 and 2013, the use of e-cigarettes increased from 1.8% to 13.5%. These trends may indicate a shift from conventional cigarettes to other nicotine/tobacco products that are perceived as less harmful or as potential cessation aids. As the use of e-cigarettes rises, healthcare providers should be prepared to provide consistent, evidence-based advice to their patients regarding this emerging issue. Purpose: 1) To assess psychosocial factors (knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, misconceptions) relating to e-cigarette use in South Texas, identify local populations most at-risk for initiation of e-cigarette use and better understand how dental practitioners address e-cigarette use in their practices. 2) To develop a) continuing education materials for dental practitioners that will increase their self-efficacy and capacity to counsel their patients about e-cigarette use and the risks associated with use and, b) bilingual awareness materials targeted to populations most at risk in South Texas (as identified in Aim 1) that can be distributed within dental offices and community organizations. Methods: The research team will conduct separate focus groups with dental practitioners and community stakeholders. The research team will conduct 2-3 focus groups for dental practitioners and community stakeholders with 4-8 individuals per group. Results: Results will be used to develop continuing education materials that are clinically relevant for dental practitioners and patient education materials that appropriate and Funding Agency UTHSCSA Title CTSA Small Community Engagement Grant Status Active Period 3/2018 - 2/2019 Role Principal Investigator Grant Detail The aims of the project is to 1) collaborate with community partners South Texas Oral Health Network (STOHN), Madonna Neighborhood Center (MNC), and Bexar County Translational Advisory Board (TAB)) for consensus building about content for the dry mouth web application. The partners will coordinate meetings and systematically develop content for dry mouth web application based on shared common knowledge. 2) Construct and develop the dry mouth web application. The dry mouth web application development will be in both English and Spanish and will focus on content, appearance, usability, functionality, informational resources, and evaluation tools.
    3) Pilot and evaluate the dry mouth web application with STOHN practitioners and patients and MNC community events. Each partner will provide a unique environment in which to pilot the application. STOHN provides direct patient and practitioner interaction. The MNC will provide a broader demographic of community input. Evaluation will be contiguous with application use. Monitoring of the continual evaluation will allow real-time adjustments to ensure quality data collection
