The specialty of dental public health focuses on the art and science of preventing and controlling dental disease and promoting dental health through organized community efforts. Our program prepares residents to be future dental public health experts who address the social determinants of health to reduce oral health disparities and inequities in vulnerable populations. The residents in this program participate in seminars, conduct dental public health research, and provide preventive services at elementary schools in our school-based prevention programs. We require residents to teach undergraduate dental students, as well as participate in clinical rotations. Our program offers service-learning experiences within dental public health clinics across South Texas.
