Making Lives Better through Occupational Therapy
Lizette Moreno-Davis Class of 2001
At UT Health San Antonio School fo Health Professions, we prepare future health care providers to return to their communities and make a positive impact. While most graduates find a career in health care, alumna Lizette Moreno-Davis translated her education into a successful, rewarding business. As a result of her business, Lizette is able to see the results of her actions in which her clients are happy and thankful for making their lives better.
Due to a terrible accident in the family in which her brother required long-term therapy, Lizette became interested in occupational therapy. This interest brought her to UT Health San Antonio where her education grew into a passion in an environment that fostered support and encouragement. The experiences she received here left her so well-prepared for her career that she considers her education and experience at UT Health San Antonio as irreplaceable. Not only did her courses make an impact on her, but her professors worked hard to ensure her success.
With the support of her family that shares her passion for helping others, Lizette followed her dreams of becoming an occupational therapist. However, during her experience at a rehabilitation clinic in Pearsall, Texas, she realized she could make a real difference using her knowledge of occupational therapy outside of the health care industry. She convinced her husband, who had knowledge of the construction and home modification industry, to start a small business of their own called AccessAbility Home Modifications. AccessAbility Home Modifications offers free home assessments, as well as complete remodeling services, to individuals with disabilities and their families in order to provide a more safe and functional environment.
Lizette credits her education at UT Health San Antonio as a turning point in her life. Her advice to current and prospective students is to not lose sight their dreams. She emphasizes that students should concentrate on their confidence and strengths in addition to building relationships with peers and instructors. As for the business side, Lizette recommends thoroughly conducting research in order to prepare a strong strategic business plan to be successful.
In addition to being a successful business owner, Lizette is a proud mother of two and grandmother of a beautiful grandson. The most rewarding part of the business according to Lizette is seeing how satisfied and safe her clients are after receiving their remodeling services. According to Lizette, “It’s like being an artist! We love what we create for our clients!”
