Ryan Vergara
Ryan Vergara Class of 2019
Ryan Vergara is a first-year medical laboratory sciences student. He was born in the Philippines but he was raised in San Antonio, Texas. He chose MLS for a number of reasons, he was first introduced to this profession when he shadowed a nephrologist at the Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital (MSTH) during his high school years. “I want to help others. I connected deeply as I also went through a similar ordeal once as a patient,” he said. This is what it pushed him to pursue a career in this field.
“A conversation between a previous graduate of the Medical Lab Scientist program and myself influenced me to do a little more digging about the profession. I saw that I could have the same impact in this career path,” he said.
Choosing UT Health San Antonio made sense for a lot of reasons, he lives here with his family, he is familiar with the Medical Center, and according to his research, the school offers a top-notch education. Originally he planned on obtaining a biology degree but soon swayed to join the MLS program.
He is currently working at University Health System as a microbiology processor and he is getting the first-hand experience. “I am able to see people in this field in action, apply what I have learned, and also learn from the professionals,” he said.
On his free time, he likes to run, just recently got into it and he is training for his first marathon this December. He also enjoys watching movies, and he is planning to go backpacking in Europe next June.
