Samantha Olivia Rodriguez Class of 2019
Samantha Rodriguez is a first-year speech-language pathology student. She was born and raised in Laredo, Texas, and received her bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas at Austin in 2015.
While working at a summer camp for children with physical disabilities, she learned sign language to be able to communicate with the campers who were deaf.
"I enjoyed learning about different ways of communicating," she said. Once she returned to school that fall, she enrolled in an introduction class to communication disorders, the diversity and different options of specialization interested her, "I was determined to become a speech-language pathologist," she said.
After graduation, she moved to San Antonio and worked as a speech-language pathology assistant at a pediatric rehabilitation clinic. She formed her life here in San Antonio and wanted to remain here.
"I applied to UT Health San Antonio School of Health Professions to learn from the local health professionals and being able to serve the community of San Antonio as a speech-language pathologist," she said.
She is planning to remain in San Antonio and hopefully work in a pediatric outpatient setting alongside PTs and OTs, "I enjoy inter-professional collaboration in the outpatient rehab setting," she said.
On her free time, she likes to run and also enjoys spending time with her family, and binge on The Office.
