Clinical Safety & Effectiveness Course

Continuing Medical Education

Course Description

The Clinical Safety and Effectiveness course is a UT System-wide course that concentrates on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. It is modeled after Dr. Brent James´ Advanced Training Program at Intermountain Health Care, Utah. The course is seven days, over eight hours a day, over eight months, offered once a year. The curriculum emphasizes quality concepts and evidence-based medicine including patient safety, quality improvement, quality tools, teamwork, disclosing adverse events, and return on investment. Projects are selected by clinical leadership to align with the strategic goals of UT Health San Antonio and University Health System. The course is project-based, utilizing quality concepts and tools which includes increasing active-learning strategies and educating a diverse group of future healthcare academicians. As of June 2020, the course has proudly conferred diplomas to 701 participants. Graduates include faculty, administrators and staff from the School of Medicine, Dental School, School of Nursing, and our hospital partner: University Health System.

Application Process for CS&E Course

Due to the overwhelming demand to enroll, the Course Director works directly with executive leadership of supporting institutions to prioritize and select projects for each session. Teams are then chosen based on the project, areas impacted, and required expertise to conduct the project.
