Researcher profile

Sidney W Atkinson, M.D.

Associate Professor

Greehey Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neurology

Division Chief Child Neurology/Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics

Dr. Atkinson is a Child Neurologist who retired from the military after a long and successful career to embark on a new venture as the Chief of the Child Neurology Division at UT Health San Antonio. He is the co-founder of the Chromosome 18 Registry and Research Society. His neurologic background gives him a great curiosity about how the brain works, and what happens when mistakes in genes occur. These interests include becoming involved in the research of conditions relating to disorders of chromosome deletion especially as it relates to chromosome 18.  Throughout his career he gained a reputation as the “go to” person when someone had a difficult time to diagnose a patient. The medical mysteries in patients are the types of patients he tends to gravitate toward. He has been active in the Child Neurology Society for more than 25 years.
