Yajaira J Johnson-Esparza, PhD

Assistant Professor/Clinical

Family Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Yajaira Johnson-Esparza is a licensed clinical psychologist and Behavioral Health Consultant at the resident continuity medical clinic at Robert B. Green Family Health Center. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of New Mexico. She was a fellow at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for Health Policy at UNM. She completed her predoctoral internship in integrated primary care at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. She completed postdoctoral training in integrated primary care at a large Federally Qualified Health Care (FQJC) system in Colorado where she served a predominantly Spanish-speaking, immigrant population. Dr. Johnson-Esparza also served as the Director of Medication Assisted Treatment at the same FQHC, where she oversaw buprenorphine services for patients with opioid use disorder. In her current role as Assistant Professor/Clinical and Behavioral Health Consultant, Dr. Johnson-Esparza provides integrated primary care behavioral health (PCBH) consultation services to a primary care population, as well as behavioral science education, training, and supervision of family medicine residents. She is also the Behavioral Health Discipline Coordinator for the Office for Undergraduate Medical Education CIRCLE Curriculum. Dr. Johnson-Esparza is a member of the Residency Research Network of Texas (RRNeT), a Practice Based Research Network (PBRN) of ten family medicine residency programs across Texas.
