Sarah Lapey, M.D.

Sarah Lapey MD, FACP is an Associate Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition. Clinical interests include the evaluation/management of all varieties of liver disease including Chronic Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), and cirrhosis. She is most passionate about treating patients with Chronic Hepatitis C with the new direct-acting oral agents offering high cure rates. Additional interests include global health, medical education and medical humanities. Outside of work, hobbies include fitness activities, with a love for all Peloton classes (bike/tread/mat); music, piano performance; spiritual development; nature appreciation and gardening; travel and global health service work. Fluent in Spanish.

Students obtain a pertinent history of a standardized patient case then are divided into groups of 10-12 and rotate through four stations: physical examination, diagnostic studies, paracentesis, and ascitic fluid analysis. Students reconvene to review ascites management, case conclusions, and summary. The total time allocated for this module is 125 minutes for 40-48 students. Postmodule evaluations by the students showed a high level of satisfaction and improvement in the students’ fund of knowledge and clinical skills, with more than 95% either agreeing or strongly agreeing with the learning objectives being clear, the learning materials being effective, overall satisfaction with the learning material and teaching, and having a better understanding of the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of ascites..
