Long School of Medicine

Summer Opportunities

UT Health San Antonio in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh and UTMB will offer an 8-12 week intensive experience targeting 1st-year Medical students interested in aging research. This program is funded by sponsors such as the National Institute of Aging (NIA) and the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR). The program will be offered during the summer break and includes:

  • Individualized research experience under a sponsoring mentor
  • A structured didactic experience that is directly linked to student research projects
  • Opportunities to interact with potential role models and peers
  • Efforts to build a sense of identity and membership for participants
  • A positive and rewarding experience in aging research

The program consists of both real-time and follow-up evaluation processes designed to continuously improve the program and to assess its effectiveness in achieving the long term goal of the program: to increase the number of established physician-investigators and clinicians who pursue research in high priority areas related to aging.

During the summer experience, trainees are expected to spend the majority of their time at UT Health San Antonio on their research project, attend several group meetings where didactic applications and career issues are discussed, and to attend local geriatrics seminars and observe clinical rotations. Students are also expected to submit their research work to the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) National Meeting for presentation.
