My primary research goal is to optimize outcomes for stroke survivors and their family caregivers, utilizing health information technologies to enhance risk factor control and provide caregiver support. My primary teaching responsibilities are in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, focused on the promotion of evidence-based practice, including critical appraisal methodology and knowledge translation.

Clinical Trial Methodology - My PhD training in epidemiology and biostatistics provided a strong foundation in research design methodology and quantitative statistics. I have managed an international NIH funded clinical trial for 7 years where I was able to apply what I had learned into the day-to-day execution of the trial. I was course faculty for 3 years in a course focused on clinical trial management given at the Society for Clinical Trials Annual Meeting. |
Evidence-Based Practice - I was fortunate to be work with David Sackett, the father of evidence-based medicine in the late 1980s. He and his group provided the methodological expertise to an international trial on stroke prevention that I was coordinating (the NASCET trial). This experience developed my interest in epidemiology and evidence-based practice (EBP). I have continued to gain expertise in this area as a co-investigator in a CIHR study examining how nurses use evidence in their practice. I was a nurse researcher in the clinical setting for many years, mentoring clinical nurse specialists to use evidence in their practice. I am currently teaching EBP in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the School of Nursing. |
Family Caregiving - My research is focused on measuring outcomes and designing and testing interventions for family caregivers of stroke survivors. This includes the development of a model of family caregiving, testing a measure of quality of life for family caregivers, examining the financial impact for family caregivers and making recommendations for interventions. |
Neuroscience Nursing - I have expertise in neuroscience nursing and have been involved in curriculum development for a clinical course in neuroscience nursing at the graduate level. As a research consultant in neuroscience nursing, I assisted neuroscience nurses in examining and developing evidence for their practice. |
Optimizing Outcomes after Stroke - My area of research involves outcomes for the stroke survivor and the family caregiver including depression, quality of life, and secondary stroke prevention and how health outcomes in one member of this dyad affect the other member. |

Title | Community of Dementia Excellence: Successfully Aging and Living in San Antonio (CODE SALSA) |
Status | Active |
Period | 10/2018 - 9/2021 |
Role | Co-Investigator |
Grant Detail | The WellMed Charitable Foundation (WCF) is proposing the project Community of Dementia Excellence: Successfully Aging and Living in San Antonio (CODE SALSA). The CODE SALSA project strengthens the current dementia capable environment in San Antonio, and enables the community to address current gap areas and build upon the exciting initiatives being spearheaded by the San Antonio Area Foundation through the Successfully Aging and Living in San Antonio (SALSA) group. The overall goal of the project is to strengthen the HCBS dementia capable system within the San Antonio community by addressing three gap areas: 1. Identify persons living alone with Alzheimer?s through a partnership with WellMed Medical Management and UT Health by developing an identification process, and using an evidence-based protocol to provide supportive services that enable these individuals to live safely and independently in the community as long as possible, including creation of a dementia friendly village concept. 2. Improve the quality and effectiveness of programs and services dedicated to individuals aging with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) with ADRD by partnering with Morgan?s Wonderland, the world?s first accessible family fun park located in San Antonio, Texas that will serve as a focal point for both fun and educational services. 3. Enhance behavioral symptom management training and expert consultation to family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer?s through a comprehensive training network that includes evidence-based and evidence-informed programs delivered by the UT Health Caring for the Caregiver program, the WCF Caregiver SOS program, and the Alzheimer?s Association. |

Title | A Stakeholder Alliance for Better Palliative Care for People with Dementia and their Family Caregivers |
Status | Active |
Period | 8/2018 - 7/2020 |
Role | Principal Investigator |
Grant Detail | Background: Addressing dementia and its consequences for the patient, the family, and society is one of our greatest public health challenges. How best to work with families confronted with a diagnosis of dementia to support quality of life and plan future care has not been well-studied. The importance of a palliative care approach for those with dementia is increasingly recognized, yet care is fragmented and palliative care needs of people with dementia and their caregivers are often poorly addressed. Proposed Solution: Build a sustainable alliance of key stakeholders who are engaged in the development, execution, and dissemination of patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) for better palliative care for persons living with dementia and their families. Objectives: The objectives to reach our ultimate goal of PCOR that is relevant and important to people with dementia, their family caregivers, healthcare providers, and policy makers are to: i) build an alliance of patient, family caregiver, community, clinician, research, and local and national organizational partners; ii) build capacity for active participation in PCOR among this diverse group of stakeholders; iii) develop a toolkit to provide guidance for engaging persons with dementia and their family caregivers as collaborators in dementia care research; and iv) identify priorities for a PCOR agenda for dementia-specific palliative care. Activities: We will establish a Stakeholder Advisory Council (SAC) who will plan and implement webinars in years 1 and 2 that focus on PCOR methodology and that review existing evidence about palliative care in dementia. A symposium in year 1 will bring stakeholders together to discuss PCOR methodology and the toolkit for engaging persons with dementia and their families in PCOR. A symposium in year 2 will be focused on identifying priorities for a PCOR agenda for dementia-specific palliative care. A web portal will be used to support communication for building the partners |
