Ph.D. in Nursing Science Learning Outcomes and Marketable Skills

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Nursing Science prepares students for careers as clinical nurse scientists and faculty. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is proud to partner with the Texas Higher Education Board in helping students develop and build on skills employers value and seek out in job candidates.

Ph.D. in Nursing Science Marketable Skills

1. Plan and direct studies to investigate human disease, preventive methods, and treatments for disease.
(General Skills 1 – 8)
2. Conduct research to develop methodologies, instrumentation, analyzing data and presenting findings to a scientific audience and the general public.  (General Skills 1 – 8)
3. Write and publish articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.  (General Skills 1, 3, 7)
4. Teach undergraduate and graduate nursing students, including but not limited to advising, supervising, evaluating, grading, participating in curriculum development, preparing course materials, and providing course content.  (General Skills 1 – 8)
5. Write grant proposals to procure external research funding.  (General Skills 1, 3, 5, 7, 8)
6. Mentor students and faculty.  (General Skills 1 – 9)

Ph.D. in Nursing Science Program Outcomes

At the completion of the doctoral program the student will:

  1. Advance the discipline of nursing through the generation of new knowledge and theory.
  2. Demonstrate excellence as a clinical researcher in the health sciences in a focal area of nursing. 
  3. Synthesize theories from natural and/or behavioral sciences for application to a specific area of nursing. 
  4. Advance evidence-based clinical practice.
  5. Assume nurse scientist roles within academic health centers and other interdisciplinary health sciences and educational institutions. 
  6. Evaluate the value and knowledge components of philosophical and ethical dimensions of issues confronting healthcare and nursing.

The Office of Career Development

UT Health San Antonio graduate students have access to the GSBS Office of Career Development (OCD). The OCD provides career and professional development training opportunities including individual meetings/career counseling, workshops & seminars. The OCD also works with the Graduate School’s Career Advisory Council and provides career exploration talks. The OCD provides graduate students a framework to discover next steps in their career along with resources to encourage and prepare graduate students for the future.
