Celebrating 50 Years as a School of Nursing

2010

Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas Inc. presents the School of Nursing
with a $3.9 million gift to anchor a new nursing education pipeline.

Dean Eileen T. Breslin, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, receives the Presidential Award by the
National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) for her commitment to advancing
Hispanics in nursing.

The Employee Health and Wellness Center is established. The clinic provides employees
with comprehensive health and wellness services, as well as monthly health promotion
and disease prevention initiatives.

2011

Julie C. Novak, D.N.Sc., RN, FAANP, is awarded the prestigious Henry K. Silver Memorial Award
from the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.  The Award honors an individual who has contributed to the expansion or improvement of pediatric healthcare and the advancement of the profession of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners at the national and international level.

Maria Danet Lapiz Bluhm, Ph.D., RN, are selected to receive the Student Government Association’s Community Service Award.  The students conducted health screenings for 1,500 underinsured South Texans.

      International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame at the Sigma Theta Tau International Research Congress in Australia.

    • The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board provides the School of Nursing approval of the new Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degree program.

    • Dean Eileen T. Breslin Ph.D., RN, FAAN, is named President-Elect of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

The 7,281 sq. foot center is supported by a $1 million grant from the
U.S. Economic Development Administration, an $850,000 gift from
Methodist Healthcare Ministries, $750,000 in construction support
from University Health System, $500,000 in equipment support from Kinetic Concepts, Inc., $300,000 from the family of Ruth Ann Baldwin,
a $290,000 grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services  Administration, a $100,000 gift from Donna Block, and a $25,000 gift from the Nursing Advisory Council.

2013

After 41 years of distinguished service to the School of Nursing, Rudy Gomez, M.B.A., CHC, Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, retired in November 2014.

2015

The Student Success Center receives a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The funding has allowed the Student Success Center to expand their undergraduate student development and research programs, bolster faculty enrichment modules, enhance student enrichment services, and grow their staff.

2015

The Summer Undergraduate Nursing Research Immersion Experience (SUNRISE) program is created. Students work alongside faculty to conduct original research and are included in peer-reviewed publications.

2017

Thanks to a $200,000 donation from singer Paul Simon, co-founder of the Children’s Health Fund and his wife, singer Edie Brickell, the School of Nursing at UT Health San Antonio is providing vital health care services to Texas Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Harvey. The relief effort is coordinated by Cindy Sickora, D.N.P., RN, Vice Dean for Practice and Engagement in the School of Nursing along with Tracey Smith Page, DNP, RN, FNP-BC and Wendy Lee, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP.

2018

The School of Nursing collaborates with the Health Resources & Services Administration
and the South Texas Area Health Education Centers Program to encourage health care
providers to practice in rural areas.

A partnership between Texas A&M International University and UT Health San Antonio offers
a new certificate nursing program to address the severe shortage of psychiatric mental health
nurse practitioners in South Texas.

The Employee Health and Wellness Center is established. The clinic provides employees
with comprehensive health and wellness services, as well as monthly health promotion
and disease prevention initiatives.

Lisa Cleveland, Ph.D., RN, CPNP, IBCLC, NTMNC, Assistant Professor, is awarded two Texas Health & Human Services Commission grants totaling more than $4 million to educate Bexar County’s first responders on identifying and reversing opioid overdose.
