Fred Philips, DDS, installed as president of the San Antonio District Dental Society

Fred Philips, DDS, assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, was installed as president of the San Antonio District Dental Society earlier this year. 

The San Antonio District Dental Society (SADDS) was established in 1913 and holds members from 14 Texas counties. The American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association (TDA) and SADDS all share a common goal of advancing the field of dentistry, educating the public on oral health issues and supporting dental professionals. This support includes providing information and protection, which has been instrumental in shaping the dental community.  

Philips served as president for both the Corpus Christi Dental Study Club and the Corpus Christi Dental Society. He has been a TDA Board of Directors representative and vice president of TDA.  Additionally, he has served on the American Dental Political Action Committee (ADPAC) and DENPAC, the general-purpose action committee of the Texas Dental Association and the TDA Council.  He has received the Advocacy Award of Excellence from the South Texas Academy of General Dentistry for representing general dentists in Texas.  

After 38 years in private practice, Philips transitioned to teaching, finding fulfillment in mentoring the next generation of dentists. He relocated to San Antonio, joined the School of Dentistry faculty and was twice selected by students over the next few years as "Professor of the Year.” Philips joined the local dental society's board of directors and became a delegate to the TDA House. This year, when Philips was installed as president of the SADDS, he made TDA history by being the first dentist to have ever been president of two different dental societies.
