Thyroid cancer represents only about 7 to 10 percent of all cancers. Diseases of the thyroid gland – including thyroid nodules — are more common. The lifetime risk of developing thyroid cancer in women in the United States is less than 1 percent.
The three main types of thyroid cancer are
- Papillary or follicular carcinoma
- Medullary carcinoma
- Anaplastic carcinoma
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is the most aggressive variety of thyroid carcinoma. The average age of people diagnosed with this type of cancer is 70, so it typically strikes later in life. This cancer often quickly invades the tissues surrounding the thyroid gland in the neck and spreads to other organs.
