Dr. Kevin M. Gureckis is on staff as a full-time associate professor, Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at UT Health San Antonio, serving as a general practice group leader for 27 third- and fourth-year students. He is a retired military officer, with more than 24 years of active duty service and four years as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee in the U.S. Air Force, completing his career as program director of the two-year AEGD residency at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, along with appointments as military consultant to the U.S.Air Force Surgeon General for General Dentistry and Special Consultant to the Assistant Surgeon General for Dental Services.
He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross with a B.A. in Chemistry in 1973, and received his D.M.D. degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1976. A one-year general practice residency was completed in 1977 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, along with a two-year general dentistry residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in 1989. In addition to seven additional past military assignments, he has had four years of private practice experience in Goose Creek, South Carolina.
Dr. Gureckis is a diplomate of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry and American Board of General Dentistry. He is a past member of the ADAs Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) as a site visit consultant. He is a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, Fellow in the International College of Dentists, and soon to be Fellow in the American College of Dentists. He is also a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of Operative Dentistry, American Dental Education Association, the Federation Dentale Internationale/USA Section, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the American Association of Dental Research. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas AGD (TAGD), President-Elect of the TAGD, prior national Chair for the AGDs Legislative and Governmental Affairs (LGA) Council, national AGD delegate for Texas, prior President and now member on the Advisory Council for the San Antonio Component of TAGD, a recognized 2012-2013 AGD new member recruiter, and member of the House of Delegates with the Texas Dental Association and TAGD. He earned the 2010 TAGD Leadership Award. He serves on the Editorial Board for the Operative Dentistry journal.
His duties at the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry have included co-director of the DS-2 operative dentistry laboratory and lecturer in restorative dentistry. He was the 2008 to 2011 recipient of the Dental Schools Development Board Professorship in Clinical Dentistry. He is past president of the Mu Nu local chapter of OKU Honor Dental Society. He has had clinical research experience and has authored scientific articles in restorative dentistry. He is a student mentor for the Critically Appraised Topics (CATs) program, and the ADA/ICD Great Expectations program at UT Health San Antonio. He serves on numerous dental school committees and task forces, including the Chair of the Curriculum Committee, past six-year dental school representative to the Council of Faculties for ADEA, past chair and current member on the Dental Student/Faculty Relations committee, co-director of the AGD Student FellowTrack UT Health San Antonio program, member of the Dental Faculty Practice Advisory Board, lecturer for the UT Health San Antonio International Dental Education Program (IDEP) and Dental Early Admission Program (DEAP), mentor for the UT Health San Antonio Teaching Honors Program, member of postgraduate periodontal research committees, and 2008-2009 UT Health San Antonio Professor of the Year. Dr. Gureckis has presented more than 250 scientific lectures to military and civilian groups nationally, and has academically supported the TAGD Fellowtrack and Mastertrack programs, new dentist study clubs in Austin and Dallas, and San Antonio Fellowship Exchange program.
