Supportive care for the caregiver

At UT Health San Antonio, we recognize that care for a person with a chronic illness or disability is not complete without addressing the needs of the caregiver. Focusing on caregivers of a person with Alzheimer's or other dementias, our program aims to improve the quality of life for family caregivers and those they care for with evidence-based services, support, education and research with value on the caregiver's health, skills, and resilience. The program focuses on:

  • Education Educational training for each stage of care, including new diagnosis for caregivers and patients; behavioral management; advance planning; transitioning to long-term care, and grief and loss support
  • Hands-on skills training Peer support training
  • Facilitated support groups by health care professionals
  • Website directory identifying resources for care and information

Community outreach and advocacy

  • Collaboration with community health agencies focusing on dementia care, support and research, to raise awareness for those living with dementia and their family caregivers promoting a "dementia friendly" community

Research

  • Commitment to research to identify effective interventions to address the strain and burden associated with family caregiving
