Izabela Tarasiewicz, M.D., F.R.C.S.(C), joined the Department of Neurosurgery in February of 2015. She is an accomplished physician and the Medical Director of the Craniofacial Center at University Health System (UHS).
Dr. Tarasiewicz specializes in pediatric neurosurgery. Her skill set focuses on the management of craniosynostosis and other congenital malformations of the central nervous system, such as spinal bifida/tethered cord and Chiari malformation. Her other areas of expertise are pediatric neuro-trauma, pediatric neuro-oncology, neuro-endoscopy, hydrocephalus, and spasticity.
She is the founding member of the UHS Craniofacial Center that focuses on treating complex craniosynostosis and cleft patients using a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. One of her foremost research goals is to redefine the standard of care for children afflicted with tethered spinal cord syndrome. She is currently collaborating with pediatric urologists regarding the use of preoperative urodynamic studies in this patient population.

She obtained her medical degree from Université de Sherbrooke, Canada and completed her residency training in neurological surgery at Université Laval in Québec City, Canada. She went on to complete a postgraduate fellowship in pediatric neurological surgery at Northwestern University, which is now the Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. She is board-certified by both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. Additionally, she is fluent in English, French, and Polish.
Dr. Tarasiewicz is currently working to develop the pediatric neurosurgery program in San Antonio and the South Texas region, build comprehensive, multidisciplinary clinics to treat tethered cord and spasticity, and establish a volunteer program to perform neurosurgical procedures for children in underprivileged regions of the world.

Dr. Tarasiewicz enjoys teaching medical students and residents.
