Mr. Koch received his nursing degree at UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing in 1981 and immediately began employment in the surgical intensive care unit with the Methodist Health Care System (MHS). After several years of bedside nursing, providing care for cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, thoracic, and complex general surgical patients, he continued his education at the UT Health San Antonio School of Biomedical Sciences, obtaining his masters degree in critical care nursing. Following graduation, Marc was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing. He worked as a cardiothoracic case manager for five years. He then assumed the role of clinical educator for a critical care internship, established to transition newly graduated R.N.’s directly into the intensive care environment. In 2006, he obtained his certification as a board-certified acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP), from The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. A fondness and appreciation for care and management of cardiothoracic patients has always been his biggest interest. Subsequently, he joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2007 as an acute care nurse practitioner. Marc is excited to be a member of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He brings more than 30 years of experience, caring for the needs of patients with various cardiac and thoracic diagnoses and ailments. His experience includes caring for transplant patients (both heart and lung), as well as expertise in management of invasive surgical modalities for treatment of advanced heart failure.
Marc is a member of San Antonio Nurses in Advanced Practice (SANAP), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, as well as Texas Nurse Practitioners. He is a former recipient of ‘Nurse of the Year’ as voted upon by his peers while at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital. Following his transition to UT Health San Antonio, he was awarded the department of surgery ‘Employee of the Month’ seven times following his hire for acknowledgement of his compassion and dedication.
He is an avid long distance runner, having completed 11 marathons, including qualifying and completing the Boston Marathon. Apart from spending time with his wife and two children, Marc loves cheering on his San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys, and especially his fightin‘ Texas Aggies.
