  • Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Specialists at UT Health San Antonio offer laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy to qualified patients.

Stethoscope

Laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy removes about 85 percent of your stomach dividing it vertically leaving a sleeve-like portion of the stomach. This new stomach size limits the amount of food you can that can be eaten. Even though this procedure reduces the size of the stomach, it allows your digestive system to function as normal.

Why might I need laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery?

Your doctor may recommend laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery if your BMI is over 35, you are between the ages of 35 and 40, have certain health conditions and have tried weight-loss methods without long-term success.

What are the risks associated with laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery?

Some possible risks of surgery are bleeding or infection. Other risks include leaking from the staples where the stomach was removed. Consult with your physician other risks that may be associated with this procedure.

What happens after laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery?

After surgery, you may stay in the hospital for one to two days. You will be on a liquid or pureed diet for a few weeks and transition to a soft food diet. You will need to chew slowly and completely and not drink water 30 minutes before or after eating.

Your body may lose weight quickly. After surgery, your doctor will recommend you take vitamin and mineral supplements to replenish those that your body may not be able to absorb from food.
