Osteoporosis occurs when bones become porous or thin due to a lack of calcium within the bone structure. It is the most common bone disease, and experts recommend that all women age 65 and older receive bone mineral density testing. Metabolic bone disease is a term used to describe any disorder that concerning the durability of a person’s skeleton which includes disorders affecting calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus and the parathyroid gland.
