UT Health San Antonio's board-certified lung specialists, subspecialists, and staff are dedicated to providing patients with the most reliable pulmonary function tests available for assessing lung function.

Spirometry and other pulmonary function tests are noninvasive methods used to diagnose lung diseases and determine the best course of treatment. These tests are also used to regularly measure the effectiveness of a patient’s current medications and therapies. This helps the pulmonologist determine if the current care plan is effective or requires an adjustment.

The exact tests and order of tests required will be discussed during a comprehensive examination by our pulmonologists. We offer patients more time during their appointments to provide a thorough review of medications, discuss symptoms and address other concerns. This allows our specialists to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to address every patient’s specific condition.

Advanced pulmonary function testing

Spirometry measures how effectively you are able to move air in and out of the lungs. We will provide you with a measuring tool called a spirometer. The size and shape of spirometer vary, but the method of use is generally the same. There is a mouthpiece you will blow into using varying force, for different amounts of time. Our pulmonologists will coach you on how to perform the different breathing tests needing to be measured. The results help our pulmonologists measure lung function, determine diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

We offer other pulmonary function tests including methacholine challenge testing and advanced chest imaging such as x-ray, CT scan, PET scan, ultrasound and more.
