Campus Carry: Working Group Discussion

From the Campus Carry Working Group Summary Report

Differences in perspective within the UT Health San Antonio Working Group emerged through robust discussion. There was a prevailing sentiment within the UT Health San Antonio Working Group that CHL holders are reasonable persons who understand the law and know that if they cannot keep their handgun safely secured on or about their person and in an appropriately concealed manner, they would not bring their handgun into a building.

There are members of the UT Health San Antonio Working Group who may not necessarily agree with the UT System Working Group document, advocating instead for as little exclusion as possible for those who have a valid concealed carry permit. These colleagues note that the potential exclusion zones recommended by the UT System Working Group are already designated as limited access space.

That said, at both the UT System level and UT Health San Antonio level, Working Group participants recognize that the final authority to make the institutional decision on implementation of Senate Bill 11 resides with the campus president.

Further, the UT System and UT Health San Antonio Working Groups note a particular need for clarity and coordination in communicating, educating, and operationalizing campus plans once they have been accepted by the Board of Regents.
