Bioethicist to speak on the ethics of physician-assisted suicide

Renowned bioethicist Ezekiel J. Emanuel, M.D., Ph.D., will deliver a “Conversations About Ethics” lecture on “The Ethics of Physician-Assisted Suicide” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Pestana Lecture Hall.

Dr. Emanuel is chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Physician-assisted suicide is being legalized or debated in an increasing number of places in the United States and worldwide. Even in places where the practice is illegal, it is requested of many physicians. There is a need to educate the medical community on physician-assisted suicide so physicians can play a central role in deciding whether and how it is implemented, and so they can respond ethically and empathetically to requests made by patients.

The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will be held at 6 p.m., prior to the lecture.
