Dr. Burge honored by North American Primary Care Research Group

Sandra Burge, Ph.D., professor emeritus in the Department of Family & Community Medicine, received the Distinguished Research Mentor Award from the North American Primary Care Research Group on Nov. 11.

The North American Primary Care Research Group, an international organization, is the research society for the discipline of family medicine.

“It was a great honor to receive this international recognition for my work with medical students, residents and junior faculty,” Dr. Burge said.

For decades, Dr. Burge taught behavioral science to family medicine residents, focusing on doctor-patient communication and health behavior change. She also lead the residents` curriculum in research methods. Her research has focused on interpersonal violence and alcohol misuse in patients in primary care settings.

She is founder and director of the Residency Research Network of Texas (RRNeT), a group of 10 family medicine residency programs located in nine cities, including two on the Texas-Mexico border.
