Faculty member named an RL5 Scholar

Mitzi Gonzales, Ph.D.

Mitzi Gonzales, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurology and the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Disorders, has been named to the RL5 Scholars program.

The NIH funded position supported by the Pepper Center “supports early career investigators appointed by an institution for activities related to the development of a successful clinical and translational research career in the field of aging.”

As an RL5 scholar, Dr. Gonzales will participate in a mentored translational research program across the fields of clinical neuroscience, biology of aging, and clinical trial design to advance her long-term career objective of developing interventions to modulate the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease and attenuate the rate of age-related cognitive decline.

“This NIH award indicates a very productive collaboration between the Glenn Biggs Institute and the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute’s Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center in rapidly moving bench research to clinical trials and growing the next generation of passionate Alzheimer researchers,” said Sudha Seshadri, M.D., professor of neurology and director of the Biggs Institute.

Dr. Gonzales, who specializes in clinical neuropsychology, earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Illinois at Chicago and postdoctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at the VA Northern California Health Care System. Dr. Gonzales joined UT Health San Antonio as a clinical faculty member in 2017.
