It’s all smiles for new graduates

Nearly 650 newly minted health care professionals walked the stage May 17-19 in joyous ceremonies that marked the beginning of a lifetime of service.

Each of UT Health San Antonio’s five schools held graduations over the weekend. The Long School of Medicine granted 224 medical degrees. The School of Dentistry had 175 graduates; the School of Nursing awarded degrees to 95 graduates; the School of Health Professions had 81 graduates and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences had 69 graduates.

According to preliminary data from the university’s institutional research office:

  • 55 percent of the May graduates were from minority groups
  • 56 percent were women
  • 87 percent were Texas residents

Also, 48 Hispanic candidates were expected to graduate from the Long School of Medicine. The School of Dentistry awarded degrees to 45 Hispanics and the School of Nursing graduated 38. The School of Health Professions and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences  each graduated 27 Hispanics.

Women outnumber men in the graduating classes of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Dentistry and School of Nursing.
