In memoriam: Milka M. Montiel, M.D.

Milka M. Montiel, M.D.

Milka Mukhlova Montiel, M.D., an early faculty member and leader in the development of the pathology services at University Hospital and the UT Health San Antonio Department of Pathology, died June 23. She was 92.

Dr. Montiel received her medical degree from the Higher Institute of Medicine, “Vulko Tchervenkov,” in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1953. After positions in Bulgaria and a series of jobs at Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center in Chicago, she joined the faculty at UT Health San Antonio in 1973.

Frank Harrison, M.D., the first president of UT Health San Antonio, signed her appointment letter, and she began her work as an associate professor and medical director of the Blood Bank, Hematology and Coagulation Laboratory. In 1978, she was promoted to professor, and in 1981 became the coordinator of the Clinical Laboratories at University Hospital.

D. Montiel was an active member of several national pathology organizations and was a founding member of the Hematopathology Section of the International Academy of Pathology. She was a member of the American Medical Association, Sigma XI, American Association of Blood Banks, Texas Society of Pathologists, Bexar County Medical Society, and the American Association for Clinical Histocompatibility Testing. The medical school graduation class of 1983 recognized Dr. Montiel’s dedication with the prestigious Distinguished Professor Award.

She retired from the Department of Pathology in 2002.

Funeral arrangements were private.
